The next supermoon in 2027 occurs on Tuesday, September 7th. A supermoon appears larger and brighter than a typical full moon because the moon is at or near its closest point to Earth.
History & Significance
The term 'supermoon' was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with the moon's perigee, making it appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is at its farthest point. There are typically 3-4 supermoons per year.
When and How to See Next Supermoon
Astronomical events follow precise, predictable celestial mechanics — the alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, or Earth's position in its orbit. That predictability is what lets Next Supermoon 2027 be calculated to the exact date and time years in advance.
Many of these events reward a little preparation: a clear sky, a dark spot away from city lights, and good timing. Eclipses and meteor showers are visible only from certain regions or at certain hours, so it is worth checking visibility for your location. A countdown ensures you set aside the evening before the moment passes — some of these events will not repeat for years.
